UC Davis Dateline

Design with a conscience

Kaleidoscopic scraps of polar fleece rescued from the jaws of the trash compactor become clothes and creative accessories when a UC Davis class worked its environmentally sensitive magic, as shown by Assistant Professor Janet Hethorn, left.

Her Design 1 class showcased innovative clothing and accessory designs at the end of fall quarter before a panel of judges, including Birch Lane Elementary School children, and textile recycling entrepreneur Rick Duchin. Duchin had challenged students to work fabric scraps that would otherwise have gone to landfills into their designs.

They were asked to make 10 or more pieces, each with a projected retail value of $30 or less. Garbage bags full of fabric waste and table cuttings were provided by Duchin, owner and president of the recycled clothing company Garbage Collection in Oakland. Garbage Collection manufactures high-quality childrenÍs clothing and accessories from used fabric scraps that otherwise would be discarded to landfills.
